What Fits in a 10x10 vs 10x20 Storage Unit? Real Examples

Short answer: A 10x10 storage unit (100 sq ft) holds about a one-bedroom apartment: a bed, dresser, sofa, small table and 15 to 25 boxes. A 10x20 unit (200 sq ft) holds a two- to three-bedroom home, including appliances and 30 to 50 boxes.

The most common question we get on the phone is, "What size do I need?" Fair question. Rent too small and you're cramming a couch in sideways on moving day. Rent too big and you're paying for empty air every month.

At Stockpiles we keep it simple with two sizes: 10x10 and 10x20. Here's how to pick.

The quick answer

10x10

Floor space: 100 sq ft

About the size of: A small bedroom

Typical home: Studio or 1-bedroom

Good for: Garage cleanouts, seasonal gear, tools,

a room or two of furniture

10x20

Floor space: 200 sq ft

About the size of: A one-car garage

Typical home: 2- to 3-bedroom

Good for: A whole household, big furniture, appliances, lots of boxes

Both sizes are drive-up, so you can back right up to the door.

What fits in a 10x10

A 10x10 holds more than people expect if you pack it well. A typical load:

  • A queen bed, dresser and nightstand
  • A sofa and a chair
  • A small dining table with chairs
  • 15 to 25 boxes
  • A TV, lamps and a few odds and ends

It's also the right size for a garage cleanout: bikes, coolers, fishing gear, holiday bins, and yard tools.

What fits in a 10x20

A 10x20 is the go-to for a full move. A typical load:

  • Furniture from two or three bedrooms
  • A living room set and dining set
  • Washer, dryer and refrigerator
  • 30 to 50 boxes
  • Lawn equipment and tools on top of all that

Contractors and small business owners like it for equipment, materials and inventory.

Three ways people get this wrong
1. Counting rooms, not stuff. A one-bedroom with a packed garage can need a 10x20.

Look at what you actually own.

2. Forgetting height. Use the full height of the unit. Stack sturdy boxes high and heavy

items low, and you'll fit far more than floor space suggests.

3. Packing with no aisle. If you'll need to get things out while you're storing, leave a

walkway down the middle. It costs a little space and saves a lot of frustration.

When in doubt

If you're stuck between the two, check our Size Guide page or call us at (352) 770-7130 and tell us what you're storing. We'll tell you straight which one makes sense, even if that means the smaller unit.

One more thing before you load: our units are not climate-controlled, so read How to Store Your Stuff in Florida Heat Without Climate Control for a few simple prep tips.
